By the summer of 1940, a mere ten months into the war, Germany had not only conquered most of Europe, it had smashed the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) that had been sent across the channel to assist the Belgians and the French.
With the BEF outmanouvered and outfought, Air Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding - Chief of the Royal Air Force - realised that the battle for continental Europe would be lost and that England would have to stand alone aginst the mighty German war machine. He made the crucial decision to not only send no more aircraft to France, but to start recalling some of the ones that were already there - a decision very unpopular with some British politicians (not to mention the French).
After the final evacuation of the BEF from the beaches of Dunkirk the German commanders turned their eyes to Fortress Britain. The Battle of Britain was about to unfold...

The Battle of Britain was the German attempt to gain air supremacy before launching their planned invasion of Britain - "OPERATION SEA LION".
